Tin Pan Alley was the name given to a collection of New York City publishers and songwriters who dominated popular music for 7 decades from the 1890s to the 1960s.
It also referred to a specific place: West 28th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in the Flower District of Manhattan, New York City. According to legend the area got its name at the turn of the 20th Century when Monroe Rosenfeld heard the racket of song pluggers and pianists and thought it sounded like a bunch of Tin Pans clanging. |
